| Kissimmee is within easy reach of Orlando International Airport but a hire car is really essential if you want to see more than the theme parks. This is best arranged in the UK before you go and must include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Extended Protection (EP) cover. Driving is easy and the traffic reasonably forgiving except in the major cities. Petrol (gas) is cheap because taxes on it are low. |
| The whole area is safe but do not forget to take the usual precautions just because you are on holiday. Only carry a sensible amount of cash and do not wear expensive jewellery or carry ostentatious valuables. |
| Medical Insurance is a necessity (you are not covered by any reciprocal agreements or the E111) and should be for at least £1,000,000. |
| MasterCards, and Visa Credit and Debit cards are accepted in most places but Switch cards are not unless they are also part of other schemes, and the well-known charge cards are not as universally acceptable as one might imagine. The exchange rate on cards is favourable because it is the one applied to commercial transactions that day. US Dollar Travellers' Cheques can mostly be used as cash thus saving paying commission on exchanging them. No foreign currencies are accepted other than by banks and foreign exchange offices, whose rates are often worse than you would get over here. |
Remember prices for everything do not include state and federal taxes. We are used to VAT being included in most prices so it is easy to be caught out. A rough and ready conversion of dollars into pounds is to multiply by 6 and divide by 10. The dollar and the euro are not far off being on a par these days. It is advisable to carry one dollar bills for tips and some quarters for road tolls from the airport. |
