Introduction to the Orlando and Kissimmee area of Florida Kissimmee is a few miles south of the popular Florida destination of Orlando and is in Osceola County . It is a favourite area for rental holiday homes and Royal Palm Bay is situated on the edge between built up Orlando and Kissimmee conservation and farmland. All the properties in Royal Palm Bay are privately owned condominiums, which means they are apartments with their own, as opposed to a shared, exit to the outside world. Prior to the influx of the themed amusement parks from the 1970s onwards the Orlando and Kissimmee area's fame revolved around growing citrus fruits and raising cattle. Before 1939 Orlando had 17 hotels while now, along with Kissimmee , it is amongst the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Here there are more motels, villas, town homes, apartments and condominiums for rent and purchase than any other area of vacation real estate anywhere. Other attractions are Downtown Orlando, the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orlando Science Center , and the Orlando County Regional History Center , and Orlando Helitours. Kissimmee offers the Kissimmee Dive Center , Kissimmee Sports Arena, Historic Downtown Kissimmee, Kissimmee Old Town , Kissimmee Historic Train Station, and Kissimmee Lakefront Park . For fishing there are the Central Florida Guide Service and Florida Fishmasters. At Forever Florida they run Florida Eco Safaris. By car you can avoid the crush on the I4 and 192 by using the Florida Turnpike and the Central Florida Greeneway. For shopping there are the Kissimmee Value Outlet shops, Orlando Premium Outlets and Florida Mall. You can play golf at the Kissimmee Bay Country Club, the Kissimmee Golf Club, the Kissimmee Golf Driving Range and the Kissimmee Oaks Golf Club. Or if you prefer there is a fitness centre at the Kissimmee Civic Center . Orlando is on the Florida frost line which means that it is the most southerly point in Florida where you can experience the occasional winter frost. Hence the popularity of the area to the south of Orlando for the cultivation of Florida Citrus Fruits. The Florida cowboys, or cattlemen as they traditionally prefer to be called, are known as Crackers after the sound their cow whips. It is believed that the cattle brought to Florida in the sixteenth century by the Spanish were the first to arrive on the continent. It is not well known that Florida remains one of the major cattle rearing states. Early in the twentieth century the mayor of Kissimmee changed the law to allow cattle to graze in the streets and consequently Kissimmee became known as Cow Town. St Augustine, on the eastern coast of Florida some ninety miles north of Orlando, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in North America . Although most people associate Florida with amusement parks, there is much more to do and see besides them. The Florida wetlands, the most famous of which are the Everglades, extend above Orlando and offer a wide range of native wildlife, some of it rare and endangered. These range from the plentiful alligators and bald eagles to the rare manatees and whooping crane. Osceola County alone has some thirty-five different protected species of wildlife. |
