| Once you have decided where you are going to stay, the next piece of the holiday jigsaw is to arrange flights, unless you have the time and financial resources to take a leisurely trip on one of the few liners that still crosses the Atlantic . Of course if you have purchased a package the flights may well be included. Otherwise it will be wise to delay actually booking any accommodation until you have the flights arranged. Air travel is relatively cheap these days particularly on the North Atlantic route where there is plenty of competition as it is served by scheduled and charter carriers from Britain and North America . Again the web is probably the best place to look for flights. There are many sites that can source the most reasonably priced carriers on your chosen route at any given time. Links to some of the more popular ones of these are featured alongside this article. Alternatively most of the major carriers have special offers from time to time that can be booked directly on their own sites or by telephone. Prices vary considerably according to the time of year you want to go and whether your destination is a hub for a particular airline. All the American airlines have a number of airports they base their operations at and these hubs tend to be the point from which their services radiate out. For example Northwest's hubs are Detroit and Minneapolis whereas Delta's are Atlanta and Cincinnati . They will quote highly competitive inclusive prices for flights elsewhere within the US that involve an international leg to their hub and an onward internal flight to your desired destination. It is worth watching advertisements in the media to see who is offering the best prices to your holiday location. But before booking a trawl through these sites on the web will either confirm this or throw up even better fares with someone else, or maybe tickets for the same airline purchased a different way. This process may take some time but will be worth it in the end. Of course you have to weigh up the balance between the convenience of a direct flight as opposed to the inconvenience of changing planes after eight or nine hours in the air, with the potential savings to be made where an onward leg internally costs virtually nothing (which certainly would not be the case if you purchased this leg once you were in the country). Yet again there are many packages available that include flights and accommodation or flights and car hire. But always be aware that these may not be giving you the best value possible and, particularly in the case of car hire, may not provide you with everything that you require (see separate articles on 'Car Hire', 'Hotels, Holiday Rentals and Packages', etc.). Different airlines offer different levels of service on their flights so this needs to be taken into consideration as well. As does how much legroom is available between their seats and what time of day their services leave and arrive at the destinations. This can have a positive or negative effect upon your experience of jet lag (particularly on flights going east) and the ease with which you experience your arrival in a strange country where everyday experiences will be different and unfamiliar. |
